Millions of Americans in southeast Texas faced freezing temperatures on Tuesday. brutal heat without the help of air conditioning After Tropical Storm Beryl left much of the region without power.
About 2.3 million homes and businesses were without power, according to Poweroutage.us, and temperatures were forecast to exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) throughout the day, the National Weather Service said.
“No power in much of Southeast Texas after Beryl, no air conditioning “could lead to hazardous conditions,” the service said in its forecast for the region, where temperatures are expected to reach 105 F (40 degrees C).

Tropical Storm Beryl slammed into Texas on Monday, killing three people as it flooded roads, damaged homes and downed power lines along its path.
The storm, which was expected to weaken quickly as it moved inland, carved a destructive path through Jamaica, Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines last week, killing 11 people before it reached Texas.
Raymond Miller, 46, of Houston, has been without power since Monday morning, leaving the food in his refrigerator inedible and his dog suffocating.
“It was hot, I had trouble sleeping, and the humidity in my apartment made it really hard to breathe. Opening the windows last night did nothing but make it worse,” said Miller, who works at a local college.

Miller said he plans to sit with his dog Tuesday in an air-conditioned car with only a quarter tank of gas left.
Texans made up only a small percentage of the 123 million people in the United States under heat warnings Tuesday. Much of the West, from Seattle to California to Arizona, was expected to see record temperatures.
Residents of a large swath of the East were expected to see sweltering temperatures again Tuesday. From the Gulf Coast to the Southeast, mid-Atlantic and southern New England, daytime high temperatures were expected to exceed 100 F (38 degrees C).
