The Gaza government has reported that at least 29 people were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a school in Jan Yunis (Khan Yunis) in the south of the Palestinian enclave.

It is reported that 53 people were also injured, some of them in serious condition.

The Israeli army said it was investigating “reports of civilian harm” near a school “located near the site of the attack,” while indicating that the target was a Palestinian militiaman.

“This afternoon, a fighter jet attacked with precision weapons a terrorist from the military wing of the Hamas terrorist organization, who participated, among other things, in the bloody massacre committed on October 7,” the statement said.

For its part, Hamas condemned the explosion at the school housing displaced persons as a “crime of genocide and ethnic cleansing.”

The EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, condemned “any violation of international law” and stressed that “those responsible must be held accountable,” before stressing that “an immediate ceasefire is needed to give breathing space to the hundreds of trapped civilians, free all hostages and deliver the necessary humanitarian aid.”

“A school where families live in Khan Yunis was bombed by the IDF, killing dozens. How long will innocent civilians suffer the most from this conflict?” he asked on his X social media profile.

For its part, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said that “the mass graves discovered in Khan Yunis and the attacks on four schools there over the past four days are evidence of Israel’s goal to completely destroy the Palestinian people.”

“These attacks also showed that the (Benjamin) Netanyahu government intends to sabotage the ceasefire negotiations. “The Israeli authorities will be held accountable before the law for their actions, which defy all values ​​of humanity and international law,” he said.

The death toll from Israel’s offensive on the Gaza Strip, following attacks by Hamas and other Palestinian groups on October 7 that left 1,200 people dead and 240 hostages, has risen to more than 38,200 dead and 88,000 wounded, according to the Gaza authorities.
