WhatsApp is adding info cards to group conversations to alert users to potentially shady numbers.

WhatsApp is a popular medium for scammers to recruit victims. Just think of the supposed family member who asks for money via the messaging app. WhatsApp wants to better protect its users from such practices and has announced new information cards for group conversations.

red flag

Such an information card tells you everything you need to know about a group conversation when you receive an invitation. The information card contains a brief description of the group, who invited you, and whether that person is one of your contacts. This should alert users in time about the “red flag.” WhatsApp previously introduced this feature for one-on-one conversations with people who are not one of your contacts.

If you feel suspicious, WhatsApp adds a link to the security information and a button to quickly leave the group in the card. Read here how you can leave a group you don’t want to be part of at any time without having to notify the rest.

Internet fraud

Although the number of internet fraud cases in Belgium seems, paradoxically, to be decreasing, you should remain vigilant on WhatsApp and other communication platforms. Criminals who have managed to find your phone number may target you.

Phone numbers can be deleted from the internet or put up for sale somewhere on the dark web if you’re ever involved in a data breach. It’s good that WhatsApp continues to increase security against fraudulent messages.
