Samsung is introducing its latest generation of foldable phones. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 do not bring any major innovations in terms of hardware, but they do bring major innovations in terms of AI functions.

After the launch of the Galaxy S flagships at the beginning of the year, the new foldable devices traditionally follow in the summer and Samsung is following this schedule again this year. Samsung is introducing the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Z Flip 6 today. The last number tells you that we are now in the sixth generation.

The concept of a foldable smartphone is no longer as innovative as it was when Samsung first launched its Fold smartphone on the European market. Other brands like Motorola have jumped on the bandwagon. Samsung is therefore not surprising in terms of hardware with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6.

That seems to be a minor issue, because this year, software is getting preferential treatment. With Galaxy AI on board, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 join the select club of “AI smartphones,” whatever that marketing term means.

Detectable hardware

After an important design adjustment last year that ensured that the Z Fold 5 closes better than its predecessors, Samsung continues to refine the design. The hinge has a reinforced folding edge to better distribute external shocks. When unfolded, the screen of the Z Fold 6 measures 7.6 inches, armored with Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The brightness of the screen is further increased to a maximum of 2,600 nits.

Samsung also saw little change with the Z Flip 6. To give it even more reason to exist, the cover display was already enlarged to 3.4 inches last year. Now you can give the cover screen a more personal touch with AI-powered wallpapers that adapt to the time and weather. When opened, you have 6.7 inches of screen space at your disposal.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 also share the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. Samsung doesn’t dare to put its own Exynos processor in the devices. The processor in the Z Fold 6 is reinforced by 12 GB of RAM and with 8 GB of RAM the storage varies between 256 GB and 1 TB. A larger cooling chamber should ensure that the Z Fold 6 can withstand heavier workloads for even longer.

Cameras, battery and charging times remain almost identical. The Z Fold 6 has a triple camera on the back, the Z Fold 6 has a dual camera. Don’t expect fast charging times here either, Samsung doesn’t offer that.

Seasoned with AI

As described, the biggest changes compared to last year are in the software. We live in 2024 and therefore a press release must contain a reference to AI in every line. Samsung is not holding back in this regard.

We’ll add one small note: the AI ​​features bundled under Galaxy AI aren’t much different from what we’ve seen on the S24 devices. There are features for editing images, reading text, and live translation. While testing the S24 Ultra, we concluded that Galaxy AI has nice features, but it shouldn’t be the main reason you want to get a Samsung phone.

Samsung and Google are also in cahoots. Google Gemini is fully integrated into the Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6. The AI ​​features also take advantage of the foldable design. The Z Flip 6 has AI writing functions on the cover screen to quickly reply to messages without having to open the phone. With the Z Fold 6, Galaxy AI can have fun on the large interior screen.

Prices and availability

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 will be officially available in Belgium from July 19. The presence of Galaxy AI comes at a price, as the starting price of the Z Fold 6 will be further increased to 1,999 euros including VAT. The Z Flip 6 starts at 1,199 euros including VAT. Available colors are silver, pink and blue for the Z Fold 6 and silver, yellow, blue and light green for the Z Flip 6.
