AMD wants to have a greater influence on the development of AI and is therefore buying the Finnish company Silo AI. The American chip giant is paying $665 million for Silo AI. The company employs more than 300 experts and works with more than 125 AI scientists with doctoral backgrounds. This makes Silo AI the largest organization of its kind in Europe.
The company is now in American hands. AMD wants to integrate Silo AI into its own AI department and thus support the development of open source AI. Open source in this context means above all “not Nvidia” and therefore with support for AMD’s AI platform and hardware.
CEO and co-founder Peter Sarlin will continue to lead the Silo AI team, which will operate as part of the AMD Artificial Intelligence Group under Senior VP Vamsi Boppana.
Silo AI specializes in developing end-to-end AI solutions that customers can integrate into their products. The company focuses on various markets, including insurance, the automotive sector and the food industry. Silo AI has already developed its own open source LLMs such as Poro and Viking.
Silo AI uses the LUMI supercomputer for training. This is currently the fastest system in Europe. LUMI is based on more than 12,000 AMD Instinct MI250X accelerators and was put together with Belgian money, among others.
