Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft’s first manned mission has been in orbit for more than a month, with no return date yet set. Following a press conference on July 10, NASA Commercial Flight Program Manager Steve Stich and Boeing Commercial Flight Program Manager Mark Nappi spoke about the mission and testing plans before returning to Earth.
Stitch specifically noted that the deadline for Starliner’s return is mid-August 2024, when the “changeover” and transfer of authority from Crew-8 to Crew-9 will occur. Ideally, though, astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams would be able to return to Earth sooner.
According to Stich’s “optimistic” forecast – by the end of July. At the same time, the mission team is still determined to return the Starliner and is not yet considering the option of sending astronauts to the SpaceX ship.
It will be recalled that the launch of Starliner took place on June 5, 204. Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams were expected to spend about a week on the ISS before returning to Earth.
