OnePlus also announces a new tablet along with the Nord 4. The OnePlus Pad 2 sticks to the square screen and improves the professional user experience.

Last year, OnePlus took its first steps in the tablet industry. The OnePlus Pad proved to be a successful debut, apart from a few forgivable beginner mistakes, and so the brand is now daring to try a new model (it has since launched an entry-level version, the OnePlus Pad Go). The second generation has the logical name OnePlus Pad 2 and was on stage today in Milan together with the Nord 4.

Square screen

OnePlus is going for a different color this year: no longer green, but a more neutral gray. This doesn’t mean that all the features of the first OnePlus Pad are simply thrown out the window. The manufacturer is sticking with the rather unique 7:5 screen ratio, which gives the tablet a square look and makes the screen appear an inch larger than it actually is (12.1 inches).

The screen may be square, but it certainly doesn’t rotate square. For pixel fanatics, the screen has 3,000 x 2,120 pixels with a density of 303 ppi. A maximum brightness of up to 900 nits should ensure that the screen can be easily read even in sunlight. The refresh rate can be dynamically scaled from 30 to 144 Hz. Because nobody wants a picture without sound, OnePlus has put six speakers in the tablet that are supposed to create a spatial audio effect.

Professional use

With the Pad 2, OnePlus not only wants to appeal to audiovisual entertainment enthusiasts, but also to convince professional users that this device is suitable for hybrid working. Features focused on connectivity and (of course) AI must keep this promise. The tablet communicates seamlessly with your phone to share files and applications.

The OnePlus Pad 2 shares internet and notifications with the phone, syncs media, and allows remote access to files. App Relay ensures a seamless transition from tablet to phone and vice versa. The Open Canvas feature is inherited from the OnePlus Open to make the most of the screen. Open Canvas supports up to three split-screen apps at the same time.

We wouldn’t be living in 2024 if we weren’t talking about AI. You can find the right tool in the AI Toolbox. The OnePlus software includes writing, reading, summarizing and translating functions. These are functions that you will also find on devices from other brands, whether under a different name or not.

Good battery condition

Under the hood, OnePlus has installed a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, currently the most powerful mobile processor. This means that the OnePlus Pad is equipped for powerful performance and should be able to do so for a long time with a 9,510 mAh battery. The battery lasts up to 43 days in standby mode; OnePlus does not provide any information on how long the battery will last when the device is at its limit.

With a charging output of 67W, the OnePlus Pad charges a little slower than most of the brand’s phones. OnePlus claims that the battery is fully charged after 81 minutes. Please note that this claim is based on a charge using the proprietary SuperVooc charger. With the average USB-C cable, you may need to be more patient.

Tablets and cameras rarely make a winning combination, but for the sake of completeness we’ll include the camera specs. There’s an 8MP camera on the front for video conferencing. The 13MP camera on the back lets you take photos, although your smartphone’s camera will most likely produce better results.

Price and availability

The OnePlus Pad 2 will be available in stores from August 1st for 549 euros including VAT and will be available in the Benelux countries with 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage. Accessories are sold separately. The matching stylus costs 99 euros, a keyboard 149 euros and a tablet cover 59 euros, all prices including VAT.
