According to figures from a study by Cable.co.uk and M-lab, Belgium ranks 27th in the world for average internet speeds. The Netherlands fares better in seventh place and Iceland leads the way with an average speed of 279.55 Mbps. The fastest internet is clearly in Western Europe, with nine of the ten fastest countries being there.

Cable.co.uk conducted a study of average internet speeds around the world based on data from M-lab. Around 1.5 billion broadband speed tests were conducted in 220 countries. The results show that Iceland has the fastest internet, followed by a few small states.
The Netherlands is in seventh place with 188 Mbps. Belgium fares slightly worse, coming in 27th with an average internet speed of 125 Mbps, below the Western European average (150 Mbps). If we look at the bigger picture, Western Europe seems to dominate. Nine of the ten fastest countries are in Western Europe.
The region with the lowest average speed is North Africa (12.52 Mbps). At the global level, there is an improvement compared to last year. The number of countries with an average speed below 10 Mbps has decreased from 48 in 2023 to 35 in 2024.
