This is the first time Biden has left the door open to the possibility of dropping his presidential candidacy in the face of mounting pressure he has faced within the party to do so, something he has so far responded to defiantly.
Pressure on Biden to drop his candidacy and abandon his reelection plans has intensified since debates at the end of June with his Republican rival Donald trump.
So far, 23 Democratic lawmakers have asked him to resign, but many others have expressed doubts about Biden’s age – 81 – and his mental capacity to face a tough campaign against Trump.
In an interview with BET NewsBiden also acknowledged that in 2020 he said he was “going to be the transition candidate” and that in 2024 will pass the witness to another person.
“But I didn’t expect it to be so divided. Honestly, I think the only thing that comes with age is a little bit of wisdom, and I think I’ve shown that I know how to get things done for the country.
“And I don’t want to leave him,” he added.
Influential California Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff publicly asked Biden to withdraw his candidacy Wednesday after his controversial debate performance against Trump.
Criticism has intensified in the past two weeks after Biden confused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during a NATO summit in Washington, and Kamala Harris with Donald Trump during a press conference. (EFE and Europa Press)
