Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, thanked the chancellor on Wednesday Alicia Barcena, For Mexico’s “major effort” to stop migration at the border.
In statements ahead of the two leaders’ bilateral meeting in Washington, Blinken assured that migration was a key issue for the United States in its relations with its neighbor. which, he noted, is “in its best moment.”
“So far we have seen “a sharp decline in the number of illegal migrants attempting to cross the border”– the American official emphasized before the meeting on the sidelines of the Alliance for Economic Prosperity of the Americas (APEP) meeting in the US capital.
“From our point of view,” he added, “This alliance has never produced better results.”

For his part, Barcena stressed that the Mexican government has taken action. actions “jointly with other countries in the region” because “many migrants (…) come from South and Central American countries.”
At the same time, he assured that Mexico had achieved ‘Big Progress’ in Stopping Fentanyl Flow towards the United States and stop the “precursor value chain” of this drug.
This is not the first time the United States has congratulated Mexico on its immigration policies and, in particular, its efforts to prevent people from entering the country was heading towards the southern border of the United States.
Mexican authorities have introduced strengthening controls both on roads and trains which migrants use to travel, making it difficult for them to reach the United States.
At the same time, Mexico has sharply increased detention of migrants on their territory, long before they reach US territory.

Both migrants and human rights groups have condemned abuses by Mexican authorities. including extortion.
As a result of that policy, as well as asylum restrictions imposed by the Biden administration, the number of arrests of migrants illegally crossing the U.S. border fell to the lowest level recorded since January 2021, as Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced on Monday.
In June, U.S. authorities reported 88,612 arrests of people attempting to illegally enter the United States. a 29% decrease compared to May and a similar figure to January 2021.when about 90,000 migrants were detained.
On June 5, the Joe Biden government introduced a number of changes in boundaries so that, with some exceptions, most people who enter the country without permission cannot claim asylum.
