Artificial intelligence, artificial intelligence and more artificial intelligence. The future of phones lies in artificial intelligence. It was the focus of the presentation of the Google Pixel 8 Pro, the main argument of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and the key to the Apple event where they presented Apple Intelligence.

In my particular case, I have been using AI phones for a long time. I have at home the Google Pixel 8 Pro, the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 and the OPPO Reno12 Pro, some of the best references in this field.

As a staunch AI advocate, I found myself faced with a constant with each of these phones: I couldn’t find any real use cases where AI was necessary or appropriate for me to use. And I firmly believe that the most mainstream user will push it even harder.

An AI focused on photography. Right now, photo editing is one of the key points of AI. Change the size of the elements in the photo, change the sky, make the elements disappear… In my particular case, I am a professional photographer and videographer, in which case it would be especially useful for AI to work for us. The truth is no, quite the opposite.

Far from functions such as intelligent noise reduction or automatic mask selection in Lightroom (PC), productive enlargement in Photoshop (also on PC), etc., the artificial intelligence on phones is reduced to removing elements from photos. Another important point in your productive editing is to select two or three of our images and create Midjourney-style drawings.

Aside from occasionally eliminating a leftover from a photo, the rest are, to me, the perfect definition of functions you once used to laugh at with your friends, then banished and forgotten.

Professional use. Another function of AI is related to creating summaries and transcribing interviews. In my particular case, as a journalist, this last point is particularly useful to me. But as an analyst, I can’t help but think of the general public, not myself. How many users will use voice-to-text transcription at some point in their lives? I am convinced that very few.

The AI also has the ability to summarize articles, which again isn’t a significant use case in my particular case in these times of quick information and 300/400 word pieces. Additionally, at least as of this writing, manufacturers are limiting these article summary functions to their own browsers.

I have not encountered a single situation where I needed to change the style of an already written text to a “conversational, professional or social media” style. I believe that AI is a significant support in writing emails

This is an interesting case as Abstracts is carried by Google Gemini but is not integrated into Google Chrome.

The feeling I get all the time is the same: my phone can do a lot of things I don’t usually need, even when I’m dedicated to doing the exact tasks it’s meant to help me with. These are options I appreciate and would rather have than not have, but the AI on my phone is a far cry from the support that both GPT and Photoshop AI provide me on my computer.

What will change with Apple’s artificial intelligence?. Apple’s AI is more of the same, but with one big difference. The system will be able to understand what’s happening across all apps. So the system will know that we have a message in Mail with a concert ticket whose date can be pulled into Calendar and whose event address can be captured in Maps.

Asking Siri to “send Pablo the address of the latest concert via WhatsApp” is a rather interesting concept, to say the least. Nothing at the moment
