1Passwords introduces a tool that allows developers to investigate how many users of their solution are willing to accept passkeys today.

1Passwordt introduces the Passkey Ready tool in its own Passage platform. This tool is aimed at web developers who are wondering if it is time to introduce passkeys. The solution allows them to check whether users are ready to take the step.

Development over time

Essentially, Passkey Ready checks how many users of a service have both a compatible device and a compatible browser, so the tool only tells you something about a user’s ability to switch to passkeys, not their skills or interests.

Developers can quickly integrate the tool into a website or application via a code snippet. Once 1Password has collected data points from one hundred unique visitors, you’ll receive a notification in the Passage console and the data will be displayed in the dashboard. There you can see how many users are willing and how that percentage is evolving over time. 1Password also shows if there are geographic differences and allows filtering by device or browser.

Why passkeys?

1Password has supported passkeys since last year. A passkey works with a duo of cryptographic keys. One key lives on the service someone wants to log into. The other key belongs to the user and is linked to their device. The key lives on the device behind an additional layer of authentication such as Windows Hello, a PIN code, or a fingerprint scan.

The user proves their identity because they have the physical device with the key and can authenticate you on it, but also the login page is guaranteed to be the right one because it contains the other half of the key. A phishing website may look great, but without the right key, a criminal cannot authenticate with the passkey.

Passkeys are a promising technology that can ultimately free the world from dependence on passwords.
