An update to the Crowdstrike Falcon sensor has gone completely wrong and is causing Windows PCs to crash.

There is currently a worldwide Windows outage. Windows users are getting the dreaded blue screen of death or ending up in a Boot loop. In our country, there are also problems at the NMBS, where the ticketing systems are disrupted, and at Brussels Airport. Two hospitals and several local and regional government agencies have been involved in the malaise. The damage in Belgium would not be too bad, Miguel De Bruycker of the CCB told VRTNWS today.

In the aviation sector, the devastation is complete. In addition to Brussels Airport, it was also a difficult morning at Schiphol Airport, London Heathrow and Berlin. In the USA, the major airlines Delta, United and American Airlines had to cancel flights, other airlines cannot check in passengers. 1,400 flights have been canceled worldwide. The banking sector also appears to have been hit hard.

Update failed

It turns out that the culprit is Crowdstrike. On its website, the security company admits that there was a bug in Falcon Sensor, a solution designed to ensure a secure connection between devices and the cloud. After a recent update, many users are left with a crashed Windows PC. The problems can affect Windows 10 and Windows 11 as well as servers. Numerous reports are coming in on a Reddit thread and on Crowdstrike’s customer forum.

Crowdstrike stresses that this is not a hack. The update that caused everything has been recalled, but for those who have already installed the update, it will be too late. The security company is currently investigating how to further help customers with a crashed PC. For many IT administrators, it does not promise to be a happy Friday and could already be a ruined weekend. A temporary workaround has been shared via X:

Chris Dimitriadis, Chief Global Strategy Officer at ISACA, shares his analysis with ITdaily. “This is nothing short of a crisis. If one service provider in the digital supply chain is affected, the entire chain can be disrupted and cause widespread outages. The irony is that cybersecurity companies are also part of the supply chain and the same companies fighting for cyber resilience can also become victims themselves and affect continuity of services.”

Problems rarely come by themselves. On Thursday night, Microsoft 365 services were temporarily down during a major outage on the Azure servers, which caused disruptions, especially in North America. The technical problems have been resolved, but limited functionality of the applications is still possible. Microsoft has now also responded to the situation at Crowdstrike and is confident that a solution will soon be found.

The incident promises to be a long story for Crowdstrike. The company’s shares have already fallen by twenty percent on the American stock exchange. Crowdstrike CEO George Kurtz has publicly apologized on behalf of his company.

We are closely monitoring the situation and will update this article with the latest information.
