Google will finally stop supporting shortened goo.gl links next year. Creating them will not be possible for a while, but existing links will no longer work.

On August 25, 2025, Google will permanently stop supporting shortened goo.gl links. From then on, they will no longer generate a response. Anyone who clicks on them or surfs to them will receive a 404 error. Google no longer allows users to generate new goo.gl links since March 2019.

Starting next month, Google will place a warning behind links. Users will first see a page warning that the functionality is about to end. This page can cause immediate problems for developers because links still matter when 302 redirects are enabled.

Developers have one year left to find and adjust goo.gl links. Starting next year, these links will become dead links, which could potentially have a negative impact on a website’s SEO ranking or perhaps even affect an application’s functionality.

Not relevant anymore

Users could use the service to shorten links and thus forward them more easily. A long URL was shortened to something like https://goo.gle/agfdzedg. Google has not offered this functionality since 2019 because the length of a URL no longer plays a role for efficient sharing.

Google regularly cuts back on its own solutions and services. If a solution doesn’t deliver what Google wants, requires more effort than expected, or is outdated, the company doesn’t hesitate to discard it. This can be annoying for companies that enthusiastically embraced the service at the time and then have to look for an alternative. The graveyard of Google services is already pretty full.
