Facebook has decided to abandon its Alexa-based Portal devices, and while some people are concerned, this should come as no surprise as these devices aren’t as popular with consumers as Google and Amazon have to offer.
The company has confirmed to Variety that it is killing consumer versions of Portal and will focus solely on business applications. However, current models continue to be sold until stocks run out. Facebook will also provide “long-term” software support for existing customers.
The source talked about how Portal managed to gain popularity among business users during the pandemic, as the company sold 600,000 PORTAL devices in 2020 and 800,000 in 2021, and the largest consumer base is on the business side. However, the devices failed to impress the smart display market, which is already dominated by companies like Amazon and Google.
For those interested, Facebook sells various versions of the Portal. You have the opportunity to get Portal TV, a smart 10-inch Portal, followed by Portal Go with built-in battery, and the last – Portal Plus, top, 14-inch. inch device.
In addition to the destruction of Portal, Facebook is also reportedly suspending work on the smartwatch and suspending its plans to release the first AR glasses. The latter was supposed to launch in 2024, but the company apparently delayed it for several years.
