Preparations for the first launch of the Changzheng-12 rocket are underway at China’s new Wenchang Cosmodrome (Hainan Island). The launch date has not been officially announced, but according to local social networks, Changzheng-12 could be launched into space in early August. Information on the payload that the new rocket will launch has not been disclosed.
The two-stage Changzheng-12 rocket, which uses kerosene as fuel, will be able to carry up to 12 tonnes of payload to low Earth orbit and up to six tonnes to sun-synchronous orbit.
The new carrier will expand China’s satellite launch capabilities for various constellations. The “Changzhen-12” will also be the first Chinese rocket with a diameter of 3.8 meters.
The Changzheng-12 test flight will be the first to use the YF-100K engine. It is an improved version of the YF-100 engine used in new-generation Chinese liquid rockets. These include the Changzheng versions 6, 7 and 8. The Changzheng-12 is equipped with four YF-100K engines for the first stage and two YF-115 engines for the second stage.
