The European Space Agency (ESA) has announced a project to create a new spacecraft Ramses (Rapid Apophis Mission for Space Safety) to go to the asteroid Apophis.
Apophis, which has a diameter of about 340 meters, will approach our planet from a distance of 32 thousand kilometers, making a close pass of Earth in April 2029. Currently, those living in most of Europe and Africa will be able to see the asteroid in the sky with the naked eye.
In order not to miss such a rare cosmic event, which according to astronomers occurs once every 5-10 thousand years, some space agencies and commercial organizations plan to send their instruments to the asteroid to study the space rock. Now ESA has joined them with the launch of Project Ramses.
Ramses will be launched in April 2028 and arrive at Apophis in February 2029, allowing the device to observe the asteroid’s approach to Earth in real time, according to ESA’s announcement.
