President Joe Biden announced Sunday that he was dropping out of the 2024 presidential race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee this year.

Before making a decision about BidenReuters spoke to Elaine Kamarck of the Brookings Institution, a member of the Democratic National Committee and the author of “Primary Politics,” about the nominations and what might happen next.

Question: WHAT’S HAPPENING TO BIDEN NOW?

A: Biden has spent the past few months amassing nearly 4,000 Democratic delegates by winning primaries in U.S. states and territories.

To secure the nomination, a candidate must receive a majority, that is, more votes than all the others combined.

If no one succeeds, a “negotiating convention” will be held, in which delegates will act as free agents and negotiate with the party leadership.

Rules will be set and a roll call vote will be taken on the names proposed.

It may take several rounds of voting for someone to win a majority and become the nominee. The last convention where Democrats failed to nominate a candidate on the first ballot was in 1952.

What happens to the campaign money? BIDEN?
