“It was the greatest honor of my life to be yours The president. And while it was my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is best for my party and for the country for me to step down and concentrate solely on discharging my duties as president for the remainder of my term,” the 81-year-old president said.

While he initially didn’t appear to support Harris, he did so minutes later on the aforementioned social media site.

“Comrades Democrats“I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus my energies on serving as president for the remainder of my term. July 21, 2024

My fellow Americans,

We have made great strides as a nation over the past three and a half years.

Today, the United States has the strongest economy in the world. We have made historic investments to rebuild our country, lower prescription drug costs for seniors, and expand affordable health care to record numbers of Americans. We have provided desperately needed relief to 1 million veterans exposed to toxic substances. Passed the first gun safety law in 30 years. Appointed the first African-American woman to the Supreme Court. And passed the most important climate legislation in world history. The United States has never been in a better position to lead than it is today.

I know that none of this could have been done without you, the American people. Together, we overcame a once-in-a-century pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We protected and preserved our democracy. And we revitalized and strengthened our alliances around the world.

It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your president. And while it was my intention to seek reelection, I believe it would be best for my party and my country if I resign and focus solely on my duties as president for the remainder of my term.

Later this week I will tell the nation more about my decision.

Now, let me express my deepest gratitude to all of those who worked so hard to get me re-elected. I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an outstanding partner in all of this. And let me express my sincere gratitude to the American people for the faith and trust they have placed in me.

Today, I believe what I have always believed: that there is nothing America cannot do unless we do it together. We just need to remember that we are the United States of America.
