In Ukraine, more than 3,000 mobile operator base stations were completely or partially shut down, and more than 20% of the telecommunications infrastructure was damaged or destroyed as a result of the Russian Federation’s military aggression against Ukraine.

This was announced at a meeting of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) by Yuri Shchigol, head of the State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection, Ukrinform reported, citing the agency’s press service.

“Russia’s illegal seizure of telecommunications networks by Ukrainian operators, unauthorized changes in the numbering system and the use of numbering resources in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine violate the right of each ITU member state to regulate the telecommunications sector within its internationally recognized borders.” aforementioned.

According to him, Russian invaders destroy equipment, seize communication channels, broadcast frequencies, replace and replace Ukrainian television channels and radio stations with Russian programs for total disinformation of the Ukrainian people.

Specifically, according to preliminary estimates:

  • More than 3,000 mobile operator base stations were completely or partially shut down;
  • More than 20 TV stations are broken;
  • more than 20% of telecommunications infrastructure was damaged or destroyed;
  • thousands of kilometers of fiber networks are down;
  • several cyber attacks have affected the functioning of the public and private sectors as well as individuals;
  • Internet access was interrupted by more than 50% of the population.

Shchigol urged the international community to support all efforts to restore telecommunications and broadcasting infrastructure and ensure its sustainability.

“Ukraine needs the only strong position in the whole world for the sanctions against Russia currently in force or under discussion to be effective and impossible to circumvent. Unless there is a truly painful package of sanctions against the Russian Federation, a permit to continue attacking Ukraine will be accepted,” he said.

As reported, the National Commission for Regulation of Electronic Communications, Radio Frequency Spectrum and Postal Services Provision has included Starlink Ukraine (SpaceX Representative Office) in its new Register of Electronic Communications Service Providers under №1.

Therefore, henceforth, Ilona Maska’s company has the right to officially provide broadband Internet access services throughout Ukraine.
