Windows 12 requirements have become one of the most discussed topics that generate the most doubts about Microsoft’s future operating system. The Redmond company has yet to make any official announcements, but the rise of artificial intelligence and the giant’s dedication to Copilot+ gives us some traces where the bullets might be headed.
Microsoft has set as requirements to be able to move Copilot+ locally with Windows 11 that we must have at least 16 GB of RAM and NPU with at least 40 TOP performance. This does not apply to the standard version of the mentioned operating system, which continues to work with 4 GB of RAM, but it represents an important change that can be transferred directly to the requirements of Windows 12.
This has led to several rumors saying that the requirements of Windows 12 will skyrocket and that we will need at least 16 GB to use said operating system, but the truth is that this it doesn’t make much senseespecially since such a high requirement would greatly reduce the number of computers that could update to said operating system.
On the other hand, it should also be taken into account that these rumors They are based on a special case and not a general rule. As a general rule, Windows 11 needs 4 GB of RAM to function, and as I said, this 16 GB is a requirement for a special version that uses local AI to improve the user experience, and that coexists with the standard version, which is which we have to take as a reference.

Windows 12 Requirements, a reasonable guess
- A 64-bit processor with a frequency of more than 1 GHz with two physical cores.
- 8 GB of RAM.
- 64 GB of free space on the SSD disk. SSD may be a recommendation, not a requirement.
- Internet connection and a Microsoft account, although it should work with a local account.
- TPM 2.0 chip for better security.
Windows 10 needs a minimum to function 2 GB of RAM. With Windows 10, the requirement was doubled 4GBand it’s very likely that the exact same thing will eventually happen with Windows 12, which means we’ll need at least 8GB of RAMand not 16GB as some rumors suggested.
It is also possible that Microsoft will decide to offer two different versions of Windows 12, one with advanced AI and one without advanced AI. The first would have higher demands and in this case we could find at least 16 GB of RAM, while the second would only need 8 GB of RAM. This is exactly something we have already seen in Windows 11, which has been differentiated in these two versions, one general and the other with advanced AI that is more demanding.
Microsoft will continue to focus on security, so it is almost certain that Windows 12 will only be compatible with computers that have TPM 2.0 chip or alternative solution, such as Intel PTT or AMD fTPM. It will also be limited to relatively recent processors, as happened with Windows 11, although in this sense I think it is most likely that Windows 12 will eventually be compatible with the same processors as Windows 11.
