Amnesty International says Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories is ‘apartheid’

Amnesty International (AI) assured that occupation of the Palestinian territories by Israel, declared illegal in recent days by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), is the pillar of the apartheid system which this country uses to dominate and oppress the Palestinian population, causing widespread suffering.

That’s what he said Edith Olivares Ferreto, director of the organization in Mexico during an interview Aristegui Livein which he pointed out that international law establishes that “apartheid” is a serious violation of human rights and consists of the institutionalization of a regime of oppression and systematic domination of one racial group over anotherin order to maintain this system.

He said that while it was generally attributed to the actions of the South African government between 1948 and 1992, a couple of years ago AI published a report that was controversial at the time because linked “apartheid” with the actions of the State of Israel against the Palestinian population.

He considered that the technical opinion of the International Court of Justice was a further call for attention and expressed confidence that put more pressure on Israel stop the attacks and start building a different policy towards Palestine, a policy of respect for human rights.

Olivares drew attention to the progress of Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories in recent decades and the expansion of physical barriers that keep Palestinians in a situation of confinement.

“And unfortunately, the international community is also responsible for how this is happening. If we do not continue to apply pressure from the United States, from the people, from civil society, perhaps we will see this system consolidate, as has been done in recent decades,” he said.

The director of Amnesty International in Mexico noted that the International Court “forceful” in describing the Israeli occupation as illegal.

“It now follows that the State of Israel Anticipate the consequences of this type of opinion and statement.”he said, as it is part of the United Nations system.

“Being part of this community comes with obligations, obviously it has rights, but it also has obligations. And the State of Israel is currently and has been violating this regulation for decades, which states that “decided to register under the United Nations system,” finished.
