The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that a whale capsized a civilian vessel on Tuesday.
Observers in the Guard’s northern New England sector received a distress call reporting that a 23-foot center console boat had capsized.
From the first moment it was confirmed that this was a whale approach.
The events were recorded half a mile from Odiorne Point State Park.
The passengers were thrown from the ship and fell into the sea.
A good Samaritan rescued both people from the water. No one was hurt, the Coast Guard said.
The crew of the Portsmouth Station ship that arrived at the scene reported that the whale did not appear to be harmed.
The ship was saved.
Authorities thanked the “good Samaritans” who intervened and saved the two victims.
The Coast Guard wrote them “Bravo Zulu,” a naval signal meaning “Well done.”
