The Ukrainian Armed Forces uses Caesar’s self-propelled 155-mm wheeled artillery units against Russian troops. This was reported in a report by Radio Svoboda. Ukrainian gunners showed journalists how the Caesar ACS control system works, which France provided as military-technical assistance.
Self-propelled artillery units fire at targets in the rear of the Russian troops in the Donbass. One of the main advantages of the ACS is a digital fire control system that allows you to fire immediately after position.
Gunner Gleb said that the crew’s task was simply to enter the coordinates. “I can at least do this while advancing to the position and the system itself will calculate all the data necessary to hit the target.”
The military added that after all the calculations, the correct ammunition was selected. Caesar’s self-propelled artillery can complete a combat mission in 3-5 minutes. This period includes occupation of the firing position and opening of fire. This allows the Ukrainian artillery to work on the principle of “maneuver-fire-maneuver”, which is a constant change of position.
It is reported that this howitzer can shoot at a maximum range of 38 km with conventional ammunition. Currently, this is the longest firing range among 155 mm artillery systems that the Ukrainian army received from Western partners.
Caesar ACS – French wheeled 155 mm self-propelled gun developed by GIAT Industries. It has been mass-produced since 2007. 72 units were delivered to the French army. Barrel length – 52 caliber. Carrying ammunition – 18 rounds. Rate of fire – 6 shots per minute. Caesar can use all NATO 155mm artillery shells. Renault Sherpa 5 with a 6×6 wheel formula is used as an ACS chassis for the French army. Source
