Apple wants to compete on its own turf against Google. One of the strongest points of Google Maps is the cross-compatibility between all types of devices, as well as the app and the web version. Apple Maps was limited to a single app that we could access from all of its devices, but it was locked behind hardware. That has changed.
12 years after the opening of the service, Apple Maps is now available from the browser On non-Apple platforms. Of course, it’s not available on all devices yet.
Apple Maps Web is now a reality
One approach from Google is to offer its services in both app form and web version. YouTube or YouTube Music are two examples of this, but also Gmail, Office Environment or the aforementioned Google Maps. Apple has been more diligent with its services, encapsulating them in app form and making them compatible with its devices.
They are gradually opening up; Apple Music is an example of this when it was launched on Android devices and later on the web version. The next to take this step is Apple Maps. As the company itself has just confirmed, this is a beta version of the service, but do not worry because it is a public test and you do not need to register anywhere or use Apple credentials: you just have to enter from this link and that’s it.
Currently the web version of Maps is only available in English, but you can browse maps and use to manage travel routes. Also to find businesses and see reviews, which is always helpful, along with information like their website, hours of operation, payment methods, phone numbers, and photos uploaded by users.
Additionally, Apple guides can also be used to get information about specific places (currently very focused on the United States), and there’s both a history and a search of places near your location, such as pharmacies, restaurants, subway stations, gas stations, hotels, etc.
Browsers and devices compatible with Apple Maps Web These are:
- Chrome and Edge on PC.
- Safari and Chrome on Mac and iPad.
If you’re thinking of using the trick of forcing the desktop view from Chrome or Edge on Android, unfortunately installing Apple Maps doesn’t work at the moment. However, the company says it’s working to expand both compatibility and supported languages and browsers in the future.
They also state that they will be available in future updates. Additional features like Look AroundThis is Google’s version of Street View for Apple Maps, allowing us to stand at street level to get a more detailed view of the place.
So if what you want is Apple Maps on Android, it seems like it’s only a matter of time.
