Employees of the AWS service (Amazon Web Services) are reportedly involved in the transfer of important data from the Ukrainian government, banking and educational institutions to the company’s secure servers. Interestingly, previous Ukrainian legislation required certain government data and selected private sector data to be stored on servers physically located in Ukraine. But just a week before the invasion, parliament passed a law allowing government and private sector data to be moved out of the country to the cloud.

• A total of 10 petabytes (10 million gigabytes) of important data were transferred, according to the company.
• These include information from 27 Ukrainian ministries, 18 Ukrainian universities, the largest K-12 distance learning school with hundreds of thousands of children, and dozens of private sector companies.

While the protection of Ukrainian data is a major driver of these mass efforts, perhaps more important is how this data is used to help the Ukrainian people. For example, carrying information about degrees and university programs from the Department of Education and Science helps thousands of students verify their education when applying for a job or obtaining another degree. These efforts also help students attend their final exams at the end of this academic year, regardless of whether they are in Poland, Moldova or Ukraine. Scientists from many disciplines are moving their decades of efforts and data to the cloud to save and continue their work.

The stored information includes the land cadastre. AWS helped the State Land Cadastre create an automated system that allows citizens to access information remotely. Protecting this data is vital for the future reconstruction of Ukraine. This work will help cities rebuild as it provides a reliable record of who owns what and where.

The business achieved similar benefits. For example, PrivatBank, which serves 40 percent of Ukraine’s population, has moved all its operations to the cloud. A total of 4 petabytes of data were transferred.
