After twelve years, Apple Maps has finally made the leap to the Internet. This gives Google a strong competitor.
Apple launched its navigation app in 2012, but until then kept Maps within the confines of its own platforms. That is now changing: Apple has launched a beta version of a web application for Maps. The navigation app will also be accessible to non-Apple users.
The web version of Apple Maps is currently only available in English, but Apple plans to support other languages soon. Supported browsers are currently Safari, Chrome and Edge. The beta version is even more limited and does not yet take public transport into account, for example. If we want to get from the Manneken Pis in Brussels to the Atomium, Apple Maps sends us by car or on foot.
Now that there is a web version, Apple Maps could be a serious competitor to Google Maps, for many the de facto standard for mobile navigation. In a direct comparison of the two navigation apps, Apple’s often comes out on top. The fact that Apple Maps was not accessible via the Internet played into Google’s hands. Maps has been available in a web version since 2005.
There will be more competition for Google Maps. The Overture Maps Foundation is a collaboration between the Linux Foundation, AWS, Meta, Microsoft and TomTom, among others, and aims to improve the accuracy and accessibility of map data.
