The Bing search engine gets an extra touch of generative AI with AI-generated search results that include a brief summary of the top-rated resources.

Microsoft is giving Bing another AI update. For a “limited percentage of search queries,” the search engine displays AI-generated search results. In a short text, Bing summarizes what the search engine considers to be the most important sources, with the source reference in the answer. The classic summary of the search results is moved below the text.

After the major update in February 2023 that introduced Bing Chat, now no longer called Copilot, Bing lagged behind. Bing Chat only managed to increase its market share slightly, from around eight percent to over ten. Google remains untouchable with an 82 percent market share among desktop users.

Strange answers

Google has been experimenting with AI-generated search results since May. The rollout has not gone entirely smoothly due to some of Google’s strange answers. The algorithms check the websites that perform best for the search terms and bundle them together without performing a qualitative check of this information.

Microsoft provides little information about how it plans to prevent this with Bing. All we learn from the blog is that Microsoft will use a combination of LLMs and smaller models. “We have refined our methods to optimize accuracy in Bing and are applying these learnings as we continue to evolve our use of LLMs in search,” the otherwise vague statement says.

AI everywhere

Content creators who rely heavily on search engines to attract visitors to their websites should not worry that AI searches will result in fewer clicks, according to Microsoft. AI-based search will “even increase the number of clickable links,” Microsoft claims. AI-generated content is gradually becoming inescapable, to the detriment of those who envy it.
