We’ve all fantasized at some point about what it would be like to win the lottery and become a millionaire overnight. This actually happened to a man in Pennsylvania, and best of all, he never took tithing.
A bug in the PayPal app allowed Chris Reynolds, a public relations executive in Pennsylvania, to feel, at least for a while, what it feels like to be the richest man who ever lived. It’s a feeling few people get to experience, and Reynolds is one of them. Let them dance.
“Pleasant” surprise. Chris Reynolds was selling used car parts on eBay. He turned on his computer one morning in July 2013 to find that his PayPal balance was still $140. What he found was mind-boggling: His account showed a balance of $92,233,720,368,547,800. Yep, $92.233 billion.
The man confessed to the local newspaper The Philadelphia Researcher He looked confused at first. “It was a big surprise, I thought it was a huge debt.” Fortunately, he soon confirmed that the balance was positive, not negative, making him unbeatable despite being among the world’s ten richest people. They will add their wealth to the world.
Temporary joyReynolds’ joy was short-lived, as all the alarms must have gone off at PayPal when someone discovered that the company was transferring an amount equivalent to the GDP of the entire planet for the next 92,000 years to a single person.
Paypal quickly fixed the error, leaving Reynolds’ balance where it was before the shock, but between his leaps of joy, the man had time to perform surgery with his newfound wealth.
Shared wealth tastes betterDuring the brief two minutes that Chris Reynolds was the richest man in the world, the new millionaire had the opportunity to donate $30 from his PayPal account to the Democratic Delaware County House ticket. When he logged back in, the money was gone.
Luckily, the millionaire told local media, “Good fortune has led me to be generous.” Of all the purchases and transfers he could have made, Reynolds has chosen to share his fortune, even if it’s in the form of a modest contribution.
PayPal’s responsePayPal not only immediately corrected the mistake, but also identified the nature of the transfer Reynolds had made, which led Reynolds to contact the former millionaire.
After sincerely apologizing for the incident, the PayPal representative offered Reynolds the chance to fulfill the man’s first instinct by donating an undisclosed amount to a charity of Chris Reynolds’ choice.
“This was clearly a mistake and we appreciate that Mr. Reynolds understood this to be the case,” PayPal said. BBC. “We think it was an inspiring gesture that Mr. Reynolds decided to use this joke to make a donation to a cause he believed in. We hope to honor that spirit by making a donation to a cause of his choice: we have reached out to him to make this offer. We would like you to know that we are grateful to have you as our customer.
