The Foreign Office (SRE) said it had interviewed Chiapas families fleeing drug cartel violence to Guatemalato provide them with humanitarian and consular assistance should they decide to return home.

He added that the Guatemalan Institute of Migration issues Certification of Humanitarian Permanence For Mexicans, it is valid for 30 days with the possibility of extension.

In a joint statement, the governments of Mexico and Guatemala stressed that both countries are coordinating humanitarian actions and consular assistance to the Mexican people in Cuilco, Huehuetenango.

They indicated that they were committed to offering people assistance, food and support to ensure an adequate stay in Guatemala.

SRE reported that agency staff assigned to Mexican consulates in Quetzaltenango, Tecun Uman and Peten interviewed Chiapas families on the ground to offer them consular assistance and protection, as well as the possibility of voluntary return to Mexico in dignity and safety.

He explained that return will be planned together between the two countries and in dialogue with the Mexican people, establishing for them a plan of dates and times.

In addition, they will be accompanied by staff from the Guatemalan Institute of Migration, as well as in coordination with the relevant security agencies.

He stressed that in the border communities where Mexicans live, the Guatemalan authorities have strengthened territorial and civil security; they have temporarily adapted public spaces to accommodate people; and they are providing humanitarian aid and health services through national institutions, united by the National Disaster Coordinator.

“The Government of Mexico thanks the brotherly people and government of Guatemala for the support, assistance and solidarity shown to their fellow citizens in the face of this situation.”
