Five commercial AST SpaceMobile satellites ready for launch

AST Space MobileThe company that built the first and only space-based cellular broadband network that can be accessed directly from ordinary smartphones has announced the successful completion of production of the first five commercial satellites, called Bluebirds. Each satellite is equipped with a 693 square meter communications array and is ready to be deployed to Cape Canaveral in the first week of August. Launch is scheduled for a seven-day window in September.

“This is a significant milestone for our company,” said Abel Avellan, AST SpaceMobile Chairman and CEO. “These first five satellites will build on the success of our on-orbit BlueWalker 3 satellite and will provide a 10-fold increase in capacity, providing connectivity to more than 5,600 sites across the U.S. in premium low-frequency spectrum. Completing the manufacturing, assembly and environmental impact testing of these satellites is a significant milestone in our mission to close the digital divide and deliver connectivity to those who need it most.”

The Bluebird satellites have undergone extensive testing to ensure they meet the stringent requirements of space operations. They are currently in the final stages of preparation for their departure to Cape Canaveral. Monitoring and final testing of the satellites will continue until the integration of the launch vehicle. Launch is planned for a 7-day launch window in September. The exact launch date will be confirmed closer to the launch window.

These dates are consistent with the company’s previous plans to deliver the satellites in July or August, with an orbital launch shortly thereafter. However, the exact timing of the satellites’ delivery and launch is subject to change depending on a number of factors, including the eventual normal course of satellite testing, regulatory approvals, confirmation of the final launch date by the launch provider, logistics, weather conditions and other factors beyond AST SpaceMobile’s control.

In the first half of 2024, AST SpaceMobile received additional investments from AT&T, Verizon, Google and Vodafone, as well as a new contract with the U.S. government through a general contractor. The company has agreements and arrangements with over 45 mobile carriers with over 2.8 billion current subscribers worldwide.

AST SpaceMobile is building the first global cellular broadband network in space that will work directly with standard, unmodified mobile devices to date. The network is designed for both commercial and government applications and is designed to address the connectivity gaps faced by five billion mobile subscribers.
