AMD releases AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 technical preview

Barely six months have passed since its final version saw the light, when AMD has already released a preview of Fluid Motion Frames 2. Something that, as we develop further, confirms two rather important aspects. The first is that AMD is quite aware of the limitations of the first generation of this technology, and the second is that all indications are that the folks at Sunnyvale have decided very strongly on this technology, and that we can therefore expect significant improvements.

Before we continue, let’s recall that the Fluid Motion Frames that are integrated into FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 (FSR3) is AMD’s answer to NVIDIA’s DLSS 3 generation of graphics, that is, we are talking about technology that improves the framerate (and therefore the fluidity) of games by creating cutscenes with artificial intelligence. And the fact that it was an “answer” helps us understand a lot of things, like it was announced in November 2022, but the announcement of its arrival was delayed until August 2023… at which point they told us we’d have to wait until the fall to the arrival of the first games with this technology.

It also explains to us that although promising, the first generation arrived a little “green”with some problems that degrade the results of using AFMF. And it’s a shame, because the approach in terms of scale is very ambitious and they didn’t bet on specialized hardware that expands compatible graphics cards and also makes it easier to implement them into games. Lights and shadows, which is called in these cases and which fits perfectly in this particular one.

The good news is that, as I already indicated, AMD took this very seriously and as a result announced the release of the AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 technical demo, the second generation of image generation technology using artificial intelligence. This second generation, at least in its current state, is compatible with AMD Radeon RX 6000 and 7000 series graphics cards and some AMD Ryzen processors with Radeon graphics.

There are several improvements that we can find AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2among which AMD highlights the following:

  • Improvements optimized for artificial intelligence – AFMF 2 provides significant improvements in image generation with AI optimization by developing an updated algorithm, resulting in smoother image generation. Additionally, to allow more control over how AFMF works with your games, AFMF 2 introduces two new modes where the optimal settings are activated automatically, but advanced users can adjust them to their preferences.
  • Performance improvement – AFMF 2 features a new “Performance” mode that reduces the overhead of AFMF 2, helping to make high frame rate gaming experiences achievable on a wider range of devices. This is especially beneficial when using AFMF 2 with integrated graphics cards, and is now the default “Auto” setting on AMD Ryzen processors that support Radeon graphics.
  • Lower latency frame generation – experience significant improvements in latency reduction added by image generation with the latest version of AFMF. These improvements apply across the board when using AFMF 2, regardless of configuration mode, resolution or hardware used.
  • More updates and improvements – AFMF 2 now supports borderless full screen mode when using AMD Radeon™ RX 7000 and Radeon 700M series graphics cards. Additionally, AFMF 2 now supports games that use Vulkan and OpenGL, further expanding the already huge number of games that can be used with AFMF. Additionally, interoperability with AMD Radeon Chill has been enabled.

So, as you can see, what we are talking about aims to be a truly remarkable leap in quality, in scope, possibilities, performance and of course in results. But we don’t know when the final version will be released, although we can count on the fact that we will still have to wait for months. Of course, the good news for the impatient is that you can now download the technical preview that is part of the Adrenalin Edition of your drivers.
