He President of Panama Jose Raul Mulinoannounced on Monday that it was introducing diplomatic relations “suspended” and withdraws its diplomatic corps from Venezuela “until full protocol viewvotes, after the election results in that country were rejected, after which Nicolas Maduro The National Electoral Council (CNE) officially proclaimed him president.

“The Government of Panama announces withdrawal of diplomatic personnel from Venezuela and suspend diplomatic relations until a full audit of the computerized vote counting system is carried out, which will allow us to know the true will of the people,” the Panamanian president said at a press conference.

Mulino, who pointed to the “deterioration” in diplomatic relations between the two countries in recent years, said: “I am making this decision out of respect for the history of Panama, for the millions Venezuelans who have chosen our country to live in, and with my democratic convictions I cannot allow my silence to turn into complicity.”

Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martinez-Acha explained that the “suspension” of these relations is of a diplomatic nature and that “consular” relations are maintained.

Mulino also announced that “he will request a meeting of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS), as established by its founding and democratic charter (…), in order to discuss the situation in Venezuela.”

Before the President’s statement, Panama joined a joint statement with the governments of Uruguay, Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, Peru and the Dominican Republic in which they expressed their deep concern about development of presidential elections Venezuela and in which they demand a complete revision of the election results and ask for an urgent meeting OAS.

In addition, the Panamanian president announced that the country would support “regional and multilateral efforts to respect the genuine popular will of our Venezuelan brothers.”

Mulino also recalled that relations with the “brotherly Republic of Venezuela have seriously deteriorated in recent days” due to the “unilateral closure by the Venezuelan government of airspace” to the Panamanian airline Copa Airlines last Friday.

Panama then accused Venezuela of “blocking” the country’s airspace. and said it had “delayed planes” of Copa Airlines, including those carrying a group of former presidents invited by the opposition to participate in Sunday’s presidential elections, “for several hours” because of “political issues unrelated” to the country’s affairs. American.

What happened with the flights was compounded, in the words of the president, by what happened yesterday. “The conquest of a democratic, free, open and transparent system.”

“We cannot look the other way in the face of an attempt institutional revolution “to the sovereign decision of the Venezuelan people,” Mulino said.

According to data published National Electoral Council (CNE) Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro won with 51.2% of the vote, a result rejected by most of the opposition and several countries.

As a result, the President of Panama predicted an increase in Venezuelan migrants due to the political situation in his country.

“I believe, and I hope I am wrong, that the flow of Venezuelans will increase for obvious reasons, and we must take appropriate decisions to protect their lives and integrity,” the president said.

A few weeks ago, Mulino announced that the results of the elections in Venezuela would directly affect the flow of migrants through the jungles of Darien, a dangerous natural border with Colombia that is used daily by passers-by, most of them Venezuelans, heading to North America in search of better living conditions.
