Venezuela Elections: UN Chief Calls for ‘Full Transparency’ in Results

He UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterresasked for “full transparency” on the results this Monday presidential elections in venezuela on Sunday and expressed hope that the disputes “will be resolved peacefully.”

He also called on Venezuelan authorities to “publish the results and breakdown by electoral college in a timely manner.”

According to him National Electoral Council of Venezuelawhich declared President Nicolás Maduro, in power since 2013, the winner this Monday with 51.2% of the vote (5,150,092 ballots), while the candidate of the main opposition coalition, Edmundo González Urrutia, received 4,445,978 votes, representing 44.2% of the vote.

Guterres called on Venezuela’s electoral authorities to “carry out their work independently and without interference” to “guarantee the free expression of the will” of Venezuelans.

Anyway, he said he believed that electoral disputes “stay focused and resolve peacefully,” while calling for moderation “to all Venezuelan political leaders and their followers.”

Regarding the presence of a group of UN experts who were invited by the government to observe the elections and whose findings are not public but reserved for the Secretary-General, Dujarric said they would remain in Venezuela for a few more days and would return to New York this week.
