Apple is doing a good job with Apple TV+ regarding the content. Gone are its early days when its catalog was so rare that it obviously didn’t make sense to pay a subscription to access it. Over the years and with very significant economic investments, Apple has filled it with content, practically all exclusive and produced in-house, so that quantity is no longer an issue, but also focuses on quality. So there aren’t as many weekly releases as on other platforms, but everything there is up to the house’s own standards.
In my case, and I already mentioned it a few days ago when I talked about the Apple TV+ special promotion on Twitch, I’ve settled into many series on the platform over the years, and I think that Apple was able to further refine its selection criteria about what they produce. Of course, I don’t want to say that I like everything they release (for colorful tastes, you know), but I see a rather refined criterion in their production.
Its main limitation is related, as we have commented on other occasions, to its scope. Those from Cupertino approached Apple TV+ from the very beginning as another part of the company’s ecosystem of products, software and services, neglecting more active placements to reach users of other platforms, which they did with Apple Music. a strategy that already places the Cupertino streaming music service in the top 3 of the world ranking of this type of service.
Apple needs to improve the revenue of its movie and series platform, and as we read in MacRumors, it seems that they have found a “new” formula to do this, because Apple is preparing to launch an ad-supported Apple TV+ plan in the UK. It is currently said to be working with the UK Audience Research Council to identify techniques it can use to monitor ad placement performance.
Subscription plans with advertising on streaming platforms have become an absolute and undisputed success. First it was Disney+ and Netflix, and then practically the rest of the services came in, in all cases with a level of contracts for these plans that is more than positive for the accounts of the companies mentioned. So it makes sense that Apple TV+ is joining the trend. Although, again, I think this is only part of the equation, if Cupertino wants its service to be more profitable, it also needs to work on improving its reach. And if they also offered a combined Apple Music and Apple TV+ subscription, for all the people outside their ecosystem but interested in their content platforms at a competitive price, the numbers could improve even more.
