Joe BidenUS President; and his Brazilian counterpart Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, They talked on the phone about Venezuela after the elections on Sunday and agreed that Venezuela’s electoral authority should publish the voting records as soon as possible.

“The two leaders agreed on the need for Venezuela’s electoral authorities to immediately release complete, transparent, and detailed data on the election at polling centers,” the White House said in a statement.

Likewise, the leaders shared the view that the elections in Venezuela “represent a critical moment for democracy” on the continent and “committed to continuing close coordination on this issue.”

“Fundamental” publication of Venezuelan election protocol

Biden thanked Lula ‘for leadership in Venezuela’ given that the Brazilian president played an important mediating role between the government of President Nicolás Maduro and the anti-Chavista opposition several months before the elections.

During the half-hour meeting, Lula reiterated his country’s position to “continue working to normalize the political process” in Venezuela, the Brazilian government said, “fundamental” publication of protocols.

Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) released its single ballot early Monday morning, with 80% of the protocols scrutinized, and awarded the victory to Maduro with 51.2% of the vote, compared to the opposition’s 44.2%. Several countries demanded the release of protocols to verify the results, and widespread protests broke out across the country, with 750 people arrested, according to prosecutors, and at least 11 people killed, according to non-governmental organizations.

Lula congratulates Biden on withdrawal from US presidential race

Beyond the Venezuelan crisis, the Brazilian president congratulated Biden on his “generous” decision to withdraw from the November elections in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris and wished “success to democracy” in these elections in the United States.

Following the election debate between Biden and Donald Trump in late June, Lula expressed concern about the Democratic nominee’s “vulnerability” but said the decision to withdraw was his own.

In addition, the Brazilian invited the North American president to take part in a meeting of “democratic countries against extremism” that will take place in September during the UN General Assembly in New York.

Biden, for his part, confirmed in a telephone conversation that he will attend the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro in November and said that bilateral relations between the two countries must “continue to grow.” (EFE)
