Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada will remain in jail from the United States without right of pledge, Federal Judge Ann Burton made the order Wednesday.
Burton noted that there are no “conditions” for Zambada Garcia’s release “that would reasonably ensure” his future court appearances or guarantee the safety of citizens.
According to a document filed in the Western District of Texas, a judge ruled that “El Mayo” will be transferred to prison where he will be isolated “as far as possible” people who are “awaiting or serving a sentence or awaiting an appeal.”
“Zambada was detained by US authorities near El Paso, Texas, along with Joaquin Guzman Lopez, the son of “El Chapo” Guzman.
“El Chapito” allegedly tricked Zambada Garcia into boarding a propeller-driven plane in Mexico by telling him they were going to look for property in the north of the country, U.S. officials familiar with the matter said last week.
However, the plane landed in the United States, where Guzman Lopez planned to surrender, but Zambada Garcia did not.
Last week, “El Mayo” pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking charges in federal court in El Paso.
His lawyer, Frank Perez, disputed the version of events offered by U.S. officials.
The plaintiff testified that Guzman Lopez “forcibly kidnapped” his client and took him to the United States against his will.
Jeffrey Lichtman, Guzman Lopez’s attorney, declined to comment on the kidnapping charge, saying only:
Mr. Zambada is free to use any defense he wishes against the charges against him.
The Mexican government said Monday it had formally opened an investigation into the events that led to the arrest of the drug traffickers, including the plane’s takeoff and the encirclement of the men, among other things. It also clarified that no military or other people were involved in the arrest.
