WeTransfer is taken over by the Italian company Bending Spoons.
WeTransfer, known for its eponymous file-sending platform, announced the acquisition in a press release on Wednesday. Financial information about the acquisition is not being disclosed. It is not yet clear what the acquisition will mean for WeTransfer employees. The buyer, Bending Spoons, is promising to put three million into the fund to support content creators.
The Italian company Bending Spoons, headquartered in Milan, is no small thing in the European technology industry. The company is valued at 2.6 billion euros. Bending Spoons had previously acquired the note-taking app Evernote and unsuccessfully exploited its YouTube counterpart Vimeo. The company’s CEO is Luca Ferrari, to whom he is not “related” despite his last name.
WeTransfer planned an IPO a few years ago, but backed out in 2022 due to the “unfavorable investment climate.” The platform has 80 million active users, 600,000 of whom are paying. Revenue depends largely on advertising, according to the company’s latest figures.
“Over the last decade, WeTransfer has evolved from a simple file sharing tool into a highly profitable and impactful platform trusted by millions of creative professionals and designers. In recent years, the company has experienced a period of accelerated growth, driven by strategic product development. This milestone will complement both companies, accelerate our growth and help us unlock even more creativity,” said Alexandar Vassilev, CEO of WeTransfer.
