Skype, Microsoft’s messaging app, is going completely ad-free to improve the user experience. According to an official forum post, ads in Skype are giving way to new AI features, including an AI-based image generator with an improved user interface. Currently, the changes only apply to Skype Insiders.

Ad-free

All advertisements will be removed from Skype channels and platforms. The company wants to create a clearer and more pleasant user experience, without distractions from ads. These changes would be implemented with the latest Insider version 8.125.76.201. Currently, Skype channels are filled with advertisements and MSN content.

New AI features

The ads make way for new AI tools in Skype. This includes a new AI feature for generating images that can be sent directly from the chat. The image generator is available in the chat window, but also in the top bar. In addition, the user interface has been made more visually appealing and the menu options have been optimized.

Additionally, Skype is rolling out OneAuth integration for iOS to simplify the sign-in process across all Microsoft apps. These new features are only available to Skype Insiders, and it’s not yet clear when they will be generally available.

While these changes are a step in the right direction for Skype, there is still a long way to go. The company must compete with other free platforms such as Teams, Zoom and WhatsApp, which have a big head start due to their innovation.
