Google Cloud is expanding its database portfolio with new updates, including improvements such as Spanner Graph, full-text search, and new editions of Spanner focused on AI applications and data analytics.

During Next Tokyo ’24, Google Cloud announced several updates to its data analytics and database portfolio. These updates strengthen Google Cloud’s technology and provide users with new ways to move from data to AI, optimize internal processes, and gain valuable insights.

Extension key

A key announcement is the launch of Spanner Graph. This extension enables graph processing at a nearly unlimited scale and allows customers to extend AI applications with knowledge graphs and graph-based retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).

In addition, Spanner has been enhanced with full-text search capabilities and nearest neighbor vector search. Full-text search builds on Google’s search expertise and offers scalable text search capabilities. Nearest neighbor vector search, based on the ScaNN search algorithm, enables AI-driven semantic search.

Spanner is now also offered in different editions: Standard, Enterprise and Enterprise Plus. These editions offer customers more flexibility and cost transparency.

Improvements to Bigtable and Cloud SQL

Google Cloud introduces distributed Bigtable Counters, making it easier to build large-scale applications with real-time analytics built in. It also added SQL support for Bigtable, allowing developers to use their existing SQL knowledge to consult Bigtable data while maintaining the flexibility of the data model. This is considered the biggest change to Bigtable since its introduction over twenty years ago.

Cloud SQL Enterprise Plus edition for SQL Server delivers up to four times better read performance than Enterprise edition.

Looker and BigQuery integrations

Looker is introducing new AI-powered features like formula help and slide generation, now available in preview. These features provide customers with new ways to manage business data and quickly gain insights.

Finally, Google Cloud is integrating a data platform with BigQuery, allowing customers to analyze structured, unstructured, and open-format data using SQL, Spark, and Vertex AI integrations.

With these updates, Google Cloud offers users powerful new tools to take data analytics and AI applications to the next level.
