Engineers propose building a pole on the Moon to provide electricity to astronauts

Experts from Honeybee Robotics, a technology company owned by American entrepreneur Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin, have proposed installing a 100-meter-high pillar on the lunar surface. According to developers, this will help implement plans for the Artemis mission.

It’s about the LUNARSABER project (Lunar Auxiliary Navigation with Autonomous Teleportation for Advanced Remote Sensing and Energy Redistribution). It will be a column of extruded sheet metal that will form into a cylindrical, deployable structure that can support a ton of equipment and serve as the central hub for power, communications and lighting for a future lunar base.

The pylon will have solar panels on either side that can generate about 100 kilowatts of energy, which can then be transferred to other devices or to power floodlights on top of LUNARSABER to illuminate the astronauts and rovers, allowing them to operate autonomously using sunlight. LUNARSABER can also serve as a communications tower.

Engineers are currently considering two types of solar arrays for LUNARSABER: one that resembles a yo-yo toy pulled from the mast’s upper payload holder, and the other a traditional solar array that tracks the Sun’s position in the lunar sky.
