While devices with PCIe 5.0 are just starting to appear en masse on the market, Micron has announced the creation of the industry’s first solid state drive with a PCIe 6.0 interface!
Micron Technology today announced that it has become the first company to develop PCIe Gen6-enabled data center SSD technology for the ecosystem across its memory and storage product portfolio to support the broad demand for AI.
At the FMS event, Micron will demonstrate that it is the first company to develop a solid-state drive with PCIe Gen6, and once again prove its leadership in the field of data storage technology. By providing this technology that provides sequential read throughput of more than 26 GB/s to its partners, Micron is launching the PCIe Gen6 ecosystem. This achievement builds on Micron’s recent announcement of the world’s fastest SSD for data centers, the Micron 9550, and further strengthens Micron’s leadership in AI-based storage.
There are no technical details yet, but the main thing is that we can see a speed comparison for future consumer SSDs with PCIe 6.0. It is not a fact that they will reach 26 GB/s because at the moment we are still talking about a dedicated drive for the data center, but it is quite possible. In comparison, the current generation SSDs with PCIe 5.0 can offer speeds of up to 15 GB/s maximum.
It is not known when the first consumer devices with the new interface will appear, perhaps in 2025 only with next-generation Intel and AMD processors.
