OpenAI is tinkering with the ability of its GPT-4 models to process JSON files. The new “structured output” feature is intended to enable more reliable output.
OpenAI presents with a blog Structured expensesa highly requested feature by developers, according to Sam Altman. The functionality specifically improves the ability of GPT-4o and its partners to read and process JSON files. JSON, stretch out JavaScript object notationis a widely used standard for data exchange between servers and applications.
Previous versions of GPT-4, but also other LLMs, have proven unable to properly process JSON files, a defect that significantly increases the risk of hallucinations. OpenAI previously introduced a “JSON mode” for its models, but this also failed to ensure that the output the models generated from JSON files remained unreliable.
Structured outputs ensure that GPT-4o can now process JSON files correctly. The feature matches the input and output, which ensures more correct results and can also help LLMs understand more complex JSON schemas. OpenAI claims that thanks to structured outputs, GPT-4o can achieve 100 percent accuracy on JSON files.
OpenAI is currently in turbulent waters. Several of its board members recently resigned from OpenAI and one of them moved to Anthropic, its biggest competitor. Another well-known former employee of the company – Elon Musk – wants to take OpenAI to court.
He feels “betrayed” by his former partners Sam Altman and Greg Brockman because OpenAI has evolved from a nonprofit organization to a company with commercial purposes. Musk says this is a violation of the organization’s original mission to conduct AI research openly.
