Experts from the European Space Agency showed a new photo taken by the automatic interplanetary station Mars Express. The picture shows a region called the Caralis Chaos. According to experts, in the past, one of the largest lakes of the Red Planet was located on its territory.
In the distant past of the Red Planet, approximately 3.7 billion years ago, streams of water flowing across its surface formed permanent reservoirs. The vast region surrounding the Karalis Chaos contains several ancient lake basins, which are actually the remnants of a vast lake covering an area of one million square kilometers, Lake Eridania.
It is interesting that experts from the European Space Agency call Eridania a lake, although its area is almost three times the area of the Black Sea. As the Martian climate changed, Lake Eridania decreased in size, splitting into several smaller bodies of water, which later dried up completely.
