Apple Maps is one of those services that always has been were exclusively associated with Apple devices, mainly on the iPhone. Originally launched with iOS 6, when Google Maps was no longer part of the Cupertino operating system for their mobile phones, many of us still remember its embarrassing debut with a myriad of bugs that marred the game for a while. the prestige that the development of society in general had.
Maybe it was a result of the bitter start, or perhaps because they realized that this was a service that offered a lot of added value and should therefore only be accessible to users of their devices, We haven’t seen it make the jump to other platforms, either as a web service or with specific applications for other operating systems. Of course, it cannot be compared to other services such as Apple Music and Apple TV+ that have made this leap, but which are commercial and therefore generate direct revenue.
And that’s how it was until a surprise, about two weeks ago, Apple has launched a web version of Apple Maps. At the moment, as we hinted back then, it’s in beta and, as expected, has significantly fewer features than Google Maps. However, this jump to the site may indicate to us that the technology company has decided to give more importance to this service and therefore strengthen it in the short and medium term. Something that would undoubtedly be most interesting.
As I say, his jump to the web already encouraged us to think along those lines, and what we read today in Phone Arena points even more firmly in that direction, namely Apple will be working on an Apple Maps app for Android. Obviously, this isn’t official information, as is the case with virtually everything from Apple until launch, so it’s worth remembering the usual thing, which is that these leak rumors should be taken with some skepticism.
However, Apple Maps has improved a lot since its launchand its user experience on the iPhone is absolutely positive. And while it’s not in a position to compete with Google in terms of features, it does have some quirks like editorial and cured added content that makes it stand out in that sense. And of course, non-Apple users’ first contact with its ecosystem, even if it comes from Android, is still a door that opens in the same way that the iPod was in the early half of the first decade of this century and the iPhone was a few years later later.
