Venezuelan opposition calls for 'great global protest' next Saturday

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machadocalled for a “great global protest” next Saturday, August 17, to protest the presidential election, in which the opposition claims its candidate, Edmundo Gonzalezhe beat up an official, Nicolas Madurocalling the election body’s results falsified.

“This message is for you who do not recognize yourselves in today’s Venezuela, who are tired of seeing your family divided, who voted and want what you decided on July 28 to be respected. See you next Saturday, the 17th, at the big global protest “for the truth,” he pointed out.

Machado accompanied his post on his social network profile X with a video in which González briefly appears and says: “Remember, Venezuela won, we won. See you on the 17th. Pass it on!”

According to results published by the CNE, Maduro won about 52 percent of the vote in the July 28 elections, but the opposition, which denounced fraud, published parallel records that showed the victory of its main candidate, Edmundo González.

Faced with this situation, the population mobilized, and according to NGOs, more than twenty deaths were recorded and, according to the authorities, 2,000 people were detained.
