From November 4th, there will only be one Paint app for Windows. Microsoft is pulling the plug on the 3D version of the image processor.

Paint 3D users will see a notification that the application will no longer be available in the Microsoft Store starting November 4, Windows Latest Notes. This date marks the official end of Paint 3D, a version of Paint with 3D functionalities.

Paint 3D was announced in 2016 as a major update to the Paint app thanks to the addition of the third dimension. The two Paints apps lived side by side in Windows 10, but in the long run, Paint 3D was supposed to be the permanent choice for image editing in Windows. Paint 3D failed to win over too many souls and Microsoft decided to pull the plug.

End announced

In recent years it has become clear that Microsoft itself was no longer convinced that Paint 3D would continue to exist. Paint 3D is no longer pre-installed in Windows 11 and the app must be downloaded from the Microsoft Store. In Windows 10, Paint contains a keyboard shortcut for switching to the 3D version: This is no longer available in Windows 11 either.

It seems like Microsoft Paint 3D is already preparing users for the impending end. The app no longer appears among the options Open with when you select an image from Explorer. This makes using the image processor unnecessarily cumbersome. You must now open Paint 3D and search for the image you want to edit from there.

One color for all

Users of the classic Paint app have nothing to fear. Microsoft continues to rely entirely on the Windows image processor. Paint will get a real AI makeover in 2023 with the addition of Dall-E under the name Cocreator. This will allow you to have Paint generate images based on a short text description.
