Cloudera is extending its platform with new metadata management capabilities that promote open interoperability and address growing needs for data security and management.

Cloudera has announced two enhancements to its metadata management solution. The updates respond to Cloudera’s growing demand for secure and compliant data management practices while increasing interoperability within an open data lakehouse.

The first major improvement is the integration of the Iceberg REST catalog. This update enables easy access to Apache Iceberg tables via external engines. Cloudera follows Snowflake with this integration.

The update enables users to use different tools without sacrificing security or governance. The integration simplifies data access while maintaining data rights and traceability across platforms. In this way, Cloudera minimizes the proliferation of separate security layers. This, in turn, should reduce both the cost and risk of data leaks.

The second innovation concerns the Shared Data Experience (SDX). It introduces Cloudera in a technical preview as a cloud-native container solution. The new version offers integrated security, administration and metadata management across the board with improvements in elasticity, scalability and performance. SDX simplifies data access for users, reduces the risk of data breaches by consolidating security functions and provides centralized management for data in the cloud and on-premises.

Safer and smoother sharing

With these innovations, Cloudera aims to help companies improve the performance, scalability, and resilience of their data infrastructure. It also aims to reduce total cost of ownership through optimized metadata management. In addition, the extension enables the exchange of metadata without making copies, thus encouraging innovation with external tools without being tied to a specific vendor.

Cloudera is trying to contribute to a zero-copy approach with its own platform. By making data and metadata available on different platforms while maintaining policies and rights, companies can use their data more efficiently. Employees should not copy it for new applications and the spread of (uncontrolled) copies of sensitive data is stopped. Cloudera previously used solutions from Nvidia for the integration of AI.
