SpaceX announces mission to explore Earth’s polar regions

SpaceX plans to make spaceflight history by launching the first commercial human mission to explore Earth’s polar regions. It’s due by the end of the year. The commercial mission, announced by Elon Musk’s company on August 12, is called Fram2, after the Norwegian ship that conducted research expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic between 1893 and 1912.

The Fram2 mission will be led by Chinese entrepreneur, polar explorer and filmmaker Chun Wang. He will be joined by Yannick Mikkelsen from Norway as Crew Dragon commander; Eric Phillips from Australia as pilot; and Rabea Rogge from Germany as mission specialist.

If all goes according to plan, the Fram2 mission will launch from the Florida coast in late 2024 on a Falcon 9 rocket. The crew will then spend three to five days observing the polar regions at altitudes of 425-450 kilometers, studying light phenomena and conducting various studies to assess the effects of spaceflight on the human body, including obtaining the first X-ray images of a person in space. Fram2 will be SpaceX’s sixth manned commercial mission.
