In the run-up to a controversial conversation between Elon Musk and former President Trump, the former felt it necessary to insult EU Commissioner Thierry Breton in response to a warning about the validity of the DSA.
Update 13.08. 16:00: The Financial Times reports that Thierry Breton’s letter was not commissioned by the European Commission. “The timing and wording of the letter were not coordinated or agreed with the President or the [commissarissen].”
Breton has not received approval from EU President Ursula von der Leyen.
Original from 13.08., 10 a.m.: The Digital Services Act (DSA) applies to all large and small companies operating in the EU and provides for restrictions on disinformation and moderation. These rules are particularly strict for platforms with a high impact: the so-called Very large online platformsof which X (Twitter) is one.
Detailed warning
How many teeth DSA has will become clear in the coming months and years. EU Commissioner Thierry Breton warned billionaire Elon Musk that the DSA is requesting to re-spread previously exposed lies via a livestream on X.
In his statement, Breton published an open letter in which he made it clear that such a stream is also subject to the provisions of the DSA if it is accessible in Europe.
Breton issued the warning after X was misused in the UK to spread misinformation that sparked far-right unrest in the country. X has a duty to moderate the entire user community, Breton stressed. “Including yourself; a user with more than 190 million followers.”
The EU has already launched a formal investigation into X. Breton points out that he and his services will use all the means at their disposal to protect EU citizens from harmful content if necessary.
Child reaction
Musk immediately responded to the formal letter with the grace of a five-year-old who doesn’t get a cookie.
To be honest, I really wanted to respond with this Tropic Thunder meme, but I would NEVER do something so rude and irresponsible! https://t.co/jL0GDW5QUx pic.twitter.com/XhUxCSGFNP
The episode feels like another chapter in the Musk soap opera, but it is more than that. The EU as an institution is diametrically opposed to a single man, his personal plans and the immense wealth that comes with them. In this context, the Union must make it clear that it will not be fooled by applying the DSA and DMA rules without delay, if necessary.
